Average Funeral Costs

Much like any other service, the cost of a funeral can vary depending upon the selections made by an individual family. Funeral costs are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission and fall under two main categories: services and merchandise. Services generally include the professional staff, use of facilities and automotive equipment. Merchandise would include caskets, outer burial containers, cremation urns or other tangible products offered by the funeral home.

In the United States, the national average for traditional burials is $8,500.00. This normally includes the professional services of the funeral director and staff, use of facilities, automotive equipment, casket, vault, clothing, printed materials and other cash disbursements such as death certificates, newspaper obituary notices and hairdressing. The casket and vault selection alone can cause this average to rise or fall considerably.
