Gretchen (Phillips) Benack

Gretchen (Phillips) Benack, age 90 of Jefferson Hills, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 30, 2020.  Born January 27, 1930 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Hilda (Klingelhofer) and Roy Phillips, and the wife of Benny Benack.  She grew up in Clairton, graduated from Clairton High School, and got her B.A. at the University of Pittsburgh.  Gretchen was a homemaker and did administrative work for the family music business. She and her husband designed their A-frame home in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. She was a lover of books, music, travel, and the arts. She dedicated her life to creating a supportive, nurturing and creative environment for her husband, her children and her grandchildren. Gretchen is survived by her three children -- Suzie (of Schenectady, NY), Ben (“Peek,” of Pittsburgh), and Flip (of Jefferson Hills) – and six grandchildren (Brian Marion, Laura Benack, Jenny Marion, Benny Benack III, Nicole Benack, and Jake Benack).  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Suzanne Phillips, Charles (Bud) Phillips, and Betty (Phillips) Dudiak.  There will be no services at this time.  The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (https://www.cff.org/give-today/).  Arrangements by the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, Clairton.
