August M. Gatto, age 84, of Elizabeth, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018 at HCR Manor Care in Whitehall. An Army veteran, he retired after 42 years as a pipefitter for U.S. Steel Clairton Works. He was a lifelong member and devout supporter of St. Michael Parish in Elizabeth Twp. where he was active in numerous church functions. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's competitions. Born August 4, 1934 in Elizabeth, he was a son of the late Nick and Jennie (Martin) Gatto and husband of the late Maxine P. (Piper) Gatto. He is survived by daughter, Jennie (Dr. Michael) Renk of Cranberry Twp.; sons, Dr. Nicholas J. (Cheryl) Gatto of Naperville, IL and Dr. August J. (Tina) Gatto of Elizabeth; grandchildren, Amanda, Zachery, Taylor, Adam, Emma and Matthew; sisters, Jennie Bandini of Steubenville, OH and Catherine (Joe) Strinich of Elizabeth; brother, Nick Gatto of Elizabeth; also, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sister, Raffaline Grilli, and brother, Angelo Gatto. Friends will be received in the Paul E. Bekavac Funeral Home, Elizabeth on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 from 6-8 PM and Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 10 AM in St. Michael Parish with Rev. Thomas A. Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project - Pittsburgh, 301 Grant Street, Suite 900, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
