Anthony J. "The Bear" Bernardo, age 87 of Jefferson Hills, passed away at home on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Born March 31, 1931 in Clairton, he was a son of the late Raffaele and Concetta (Demis) Bernardo. A retired quality control man at Continental Can Corp. in West Mifflin, Anthony was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Clairton and a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a combat medic. He was also a member of the American Legion Daniel Keffer Post #75 of Clairton and the VFW Post #803 of Wilson. He joins his wife, the late Caroline V. (Opatkiewicz) Bernardo, who passed away February 7, 2016, and his siblings: Grace Curinga, Esther Mackinack, Vince and Mildred Bernardo, Nellie Rossi, Angie Oczypok, and Mary Carroll. Anthony is survived by his children Raffaele "Ralph" (Linda) Bernardo of Jefferson Hills, Alex (Barbara) Bernardo of Denver, CO, and Patricia "Patty" (Chris) DiCarlo of Jefferson Hills; his four grandchildren Leann (Thomas) Ruffing, Gina DiCarlo, and Lydia and Alexa Bernardo; his three great-granddaughters Anna Rose, Grace, and Olivia Ruffing; and also many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, Clairton, on Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 7 to 9 PM and Friday, June 15, 2018 from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10 AM in St. Clare of Assisi Church with procession and entombment with military honors to follow to Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills.
