Irene M. Rapsack

Irene M. Rapsack, age 92 and formerly of Clairton, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 in Overlook Green Nursing Facility, Whitehall.  Born May 3, 1927 in Clairton, she was a daughter of the late Mitro and Julia (Kolcun) Hrapchak.  A member of Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church in Clairton, Irene served as a nun for more than 30 years with the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate of Sloatsburg, NY, earning her Ph.D. from Fordham University.   She taught all over and outside of the United States at various schools and institutions before taking a job with the Byzantine Diocese of Cleveland, then retiring back home to the area.  Irene was a self-sufficient, independent, and devout woman who made her own way and lived a very interesting life.  She is survived by many generations of nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her siblings Ann Cyphers, Mary Guzy, Suzanne Kettish, Julia Hemenic, and Helen, John, and Andrew Hrapchak.  Friends will be received in the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, Clairton, on Sunday, June 30, 2019 from 2 to 6 PM.  A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday, July 1, 2019 at 10 AM in Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church with Fr. Andrew Deskavich officiating.  Procession and burial will follow to Ascension Cemetery, Clairton.  Memorial contributions in Irene's name should be made to Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, 316 Park Ave., Clairton, PA 15025.
